This is the F82 M4, the coupe that took over from the E92 M3 when BMW moved its two-door 3 Series into the 4 Series range in 2014. The engine is the S55: a 3.0-litre inline-six with two turbochargers, a closed-deck block, a forged crankshaft and an oil system designed to survive track use. The specification table lists 431 hp and Competition Orange paint, and the exhaust is an Akrapovic system.
The S55 marked BMW M's switch from the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 of the previous M3 to forced induction, and the numbers explain the decision: torque rose to 550 Nm and arrived from under 2,000 rpm, while the car shed mass through a carbon-fibre roof, a carbon-fibre propshaft and an aluminium bonnet. The rear axle uses BMW's electronically controlled Active M Differential, and the chassis was engineered for both the six-speed manual and the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Akrapovic exhausts were sold through BMW's own M Performance catalogue as well as the aftermarket, usually in titanium, and the reason owners fit them has not changed: less mass behind the rear axle and more of the six-cylinder's upper register.
Why the F82 M4 Is Already a Collector Car
The F82 was built until 2020 and is increasingly read as a transitional car: the last M4 generation to use the S55 engine, and the last before BMW offered the model with all-wheel drive. Where the model line goes next is a recurring subject for our news desk, from the M Concept Neue Klasse, which previews an electric M car, to the 2027 BMW 7 Series and its V8. Read against either, a 2018 M4 with a manual-era engine and a mechanical differential looks less like a used car and more like a fixed point.
Inside the collection the M4 is the counterweight to the older German metal. It shares the garage with the BMW Z8, a hand-built aluminium roadster from the era when M engines still breathed unassisted, and together the two cover both sides of BMW's modern history. Comparable machinery from other decades is in the Legends section.
